Grado Headband (Silver / Gold Headband Assembly) Installation

What you'll need: Your new headband, a steady hand, and a Phillips-head screwdriver (size #00)
Installation Time 🕓 :
10-15 minutes

Step 1: Shape Your New Headband

Before you begin, gently pre-shape the new headband by hand to match the curve of your Grado headphones' steel band, with the cushion side facing inward. This will make sliding the headband into place much easier. Don't be afraid to apply a little pressure—the headband's core is made from durable, high-density fiberboard designed to hold its shape.

Step 2: Remove the Earpads (Optional)
Begin by gently removing the earpads from your Grado headphones. This step isn't required, but it helps keep the earpads clean and out of the way during the installation.

Step 3: Detaching cover plate from the Junction Block.

Choose either side of the headphones and hold the junction block securely between your fingers. Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the two screws on the inner side of the junction block (the side that faces your head when worn) to detach the cover plate.

Step 4: Detaching the steel band from the junction block

With the cover plate removed, you'll see another two Phillips-head screws that secure the steel band to the junction block. While supporting the steel band to avoid placing unnecessary tension on the screws, remove these two screws. These screws are shorter than the pair that held the cover plate in place.

Once the screws are removed, the steel band will come free from the junction block. Keep the two pairs of screws separate, as they are different lengths and will be reused during reassembly.

Step 5: Sliding out the Old Headband
Once you've detached one junction block from the steel band (there's no need to remove both), simply slide the old headband off from that side.

Step 6: Sliding in the New Headband
With the old headband removed, slide the new one into place. Make sure the cushion side is facing downward—if you pre-shaped the headband in Step 1, it should naturally curve the correct way. Insert one end of the steel band into the new headband and slide it through until the end of the headband reaches the junction block and the steel band emerges from the opposite side.
Troubleshooting: What if the Steel Band Gets Stuck?
It's normal for the steel band to catch slightly on the rolled leather edges, which are designed to give the headband a cleaner, more refined finish. If this happens, slide the band in as far as it will go, then insert a thin tool, such as a small screwdriver, into the opposite opening until it reaches the steel band. Gently guide the band through while continuing to push, allowing it to pass smoothly without placing unnecessary stress on the leather.

Step 7: Reattaching the steel band to the junction block

Before reattaching the steel band, check that the headphone cable isn't twisted and hangs naturally. If needed, rotate the cup assembly until the cable sits correctly.

Next, insert the end of the steel band back into the junction block and align the screw holes. Reinstall the two shorter screws to secure the steel band in place.

Step 8: Aligning the Height Rod and Reattaching the Junction Block Cover

Before reinstalling the cover plate, rotate the height rod until the flat side is facing outward toward the cover plate. This allows the silicone pads on the inside of the cover plate to press against the flat surface, providing the correct friction for smooth height adjustment.

Once the rod is correctly positioned, press the cover plate back onto the junction block, ensuring it sits flush and aligns properly. Reinstall the two longer screws to secure the cover plate in place. Tighten the screws carefully without overtightening.

Step 9: Earpads On
Reattach the earpads, and your headphones are ready for your next listening session!
