Replacing your Grado headband is simple. Follow these steps, and you'll have your headphones upgraded in no time.
Step 1: Shape Your New Headband
Before you begin, take a moment to shape the new headband by hand. Gently curve it into a similar shape as the inner steel band on your Grado headphones, with the cushion side facing inwards. This will make it easier to push the headband through during installation. Don't worry about damaging it—the core of the headband is made of dense fiberboard, which is durable.
Step 2: Remove the Earpads (Optional)
Start by gently removing the earpads from your Grado headphones. While this step is optional, it's a good idea to keep the soft earpads clean and away during installation.
Step 3: Separating the steel band from the junction block
Next, you'll need to focus on separating a Grado junction block from the inner steel band, which can take a bit of effort depending on how much glue was used during manufacturing.
Choose a side—either one works—and firmly grip the end of the stock headband where it connects to the junction block. With your other hand, gently rock the junction block back and forth (and side to side if needed) while pulling until it loosens, until the steel band comes free of the junction block. You’ll only need to separate one of the blocks from the band.
Step 4: Sliding out the Old Headband
Once you've separated one of the junction blocks from the metal band (no need to do both), the rest is straightforward. Slide out the old headband from that side.
Step 5: Sliding in the New Headband
With the old headband removed, it’s time to slide in the new one. Ensure that the cushion is facing downwards—if you've completed step 1 (shaping your new headband), the cushion side will naturally face the inside of the curve. Pick one end of the headband and insert the tip of the steel band into it. The headband will be fully inserted when the first end touches the plastic block, and the steel band comes out of the other end.
Troubleshooting: What if the Steel Band Gets Stuck?
It’s common for the steel band to catch on the rolled edges of the leather headband, a feature we've designed for a more polished look. Unfortunately, this means that the rolled edges could get caught when the steel band is pushed through, but this issue only arises during installation. To fix this, insert the band as far as possible, then insert a thin tool like a small screwdriver through the exit side of the headband until it touches the metal band. Then, gently guide the steel band through. This will help it slide out smoothly without putting too much strain on the materials.
Step 6: Reattach the Headband
The last part is to connect the exposed steel band back to the plastic block. If you find the headband sliding out while inserting the steel band back, hold the headband together with the junction block for more leverage.
Commonly, the junction block will be tight enough to hold the steel band back in place. However, if the fit is too loose, consider these two solutions:
- Hot Glue: A small dab of hot glue using a hot glue gun on the end of the steel band before insertion will provide a temporary fix.
- Superglue: If you’re looking for a more permanent solution, apply a small amount of superglue on the end of the steel band before sliding it back in. This will ensure it stays securely in place.
